Dubious Honor

AFTER 21 YEARS, I AM GRADUATING.

After 3 years at Columbus State University majoring in History I dropped out…primarily because I actually majored in work, goofing off and hanging at the Baptist Student Union.

I transfered to Charleston Southern University.  There, I majored in Youth Ministry and did the dumbest thing in my life.  As a cocky young kid, I decided to DO ministry instead of learn about ministry.

I dropped out.

18 months ago I decided to go back.  I wanted to complete something.  I wanted to show my kids that education is important.  I wanted to learn how to be a better pastor.  So as humiliating as it was to return to school I did.  I’m the old guy that got his degree.  I received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Luther Rice University.

It is a dubious honor … dubious because it took me so long to recognize the importance, dubious because I know education and knowledge are important yet I treated it so lightly…but I am still proud.  I am still excited.  I am as excited as the 22 year olds that are walking down the isles.

There will be no rest for the weary…I am beginning in January my work on my Masters Degree in Christian Education through Liberty University.
